HELP! Office Live addin failed install

Hello,

I just downloaded the latest version (v1.1 I think) of the Office addin but it failed to install. Below is the install log. Plesae please tell me why it didn't work.

Jamie: just tried it myself, worked fine. Did you try to un-install with control panel and install again?

Re: HELP! Office Live addin failed install

Hi Jamie,

The 4th last line shows that the installation of Office KB941637 ended with an error code of 17031 - Invalid Baseline.

This error occurs when people are using a beta or non-standard version of Office 2007.  The package is designed to install only on official Office 2007 RTM or SP1 releases.  We have seen this type of error on corporate machines where the RC candidate of SP1 was pushed out to users instead of the official SP1.

If you have an Office SP1 beta, prerelease or release candidate, you should uninstall it and update to the official SP1 version and then apply this hotfix.  You can run this hotfix separately and, if it succeeds, the Office Live Addin will detect and skip over this hotfix.

For reference, it appears that the hotfix was decompressed to your HD to the following folder: (other users should see a similar file referenced in the 5th last line in the log)  'C:\Users\jamie\AppData\Local\Temp\VSD27BD.tmp\OfficeKB941637'.  You can run this hotfix directly once you get your Office version back to an official SP1 state.

As a heads up, users that install this package on Office 2007 RTM and THEN upgrade to Office SP1 will lose the benefit of the hotfix.  We recommend upgrading to SP1 first and then applying this hotfix.

Re: HELP! Office Live addin failed install

Thanks for the great reply Oscar.

I tried to install the hotfix manually and sure enough I got the message "The exected version of the product was not found on the system"

This is really baffling though because I am SURE I have a good version of Office 2007. Here is the version information taken from Outlook 'about' page:

Microsoft(R) Office Outlook(R) 2007 (12.0.6300.5000) SP1 MSO (12.0.6213.1000)

Can anyone tell me if they see something different?

Thanks

Re: HELP! Office Live addin failed install

Hi Jamie,

The Office KB941637 hotfix package can be applied to Office 2007 RTM or SP1.  Once done, you should be upgraded to 12.0.6300.5000 (SP1) with MSO (12.0.6300.5000).

It appears that you applied this patch BEFORE upgrading to SP1.  You then installed SP1 (which reverted the hotfix change to MSO BACK to 12.0.6213.1000) and now you are in a situation where you can't apply the patch again.

My recommendation would be to reinstall Office 2007 (RTM) to get back to a supported state, upgrade to SP1 and then install the hotfix.

In the near future, the post SP1 rollup will also include this hotfix so this type of problem will go away.

Re: HELP! Office Live addin failed install

Hi Oscar,

Thanks again for the great reply.

Phew, seems like a lot of work for very small gain. I'll hold off from this until it becomes a problem for me - at least now its here discoverable for anyone else having the same problem.

 Thanks

Jamie

P.S. Huge digression here but nevertheless.... This problem highlights one of the inate problems of installed software and, conversely, one of the benefits of a platform such as Google Docs. By and large I agree with the points that Dare Obasanjo made in his post Offline Web Apps, Dumb Idea or Really Dumb Idea? but I don't think MSFT can deny the benefit of zero-footprint apps. Hopefully there are already moves within Microsoft to address this situation.

Thanks for sharing, Jamie.

I was searching everywhere for a solution to this problem, but could not even find anyone describing the same issue. I agree on your view. The suggested solution is just to much trouble. I will wait...

Thanks

Klaus

Re: HELP! Office Live addin failed install

To me it looks like KB 941637 can't be installed when you're running Office 2007 Home/Student Edition.

When you go to http://support.microsoft.com/kb/941637/en-us you can see that this update doesn't apply to Office 2007 Home/Student.

So may I ask what version of Office you are running? I have Office 2007 Home/Student installed and the addin won't install because of KB 941637.

Re: HELP! Office Live addin failed install

I'm also having trouble installing KB 941637.

It's been suggested in this thread that this may be because of this hotfix package having been applied before SP1. However, that is definitely not the case for me. Here's what I've done, in order:

  1. Installed Windows Vista Business with SP1 integrated.
  2. Installed Office 2007 Enterprise RTM.
  3. Installed Visio 2007 Professional RTM.
  4. Installed Project 2007 Professional RTM.
  5. Installed SP1 for Office 2007 Suites.
  6. Installed SP1 for Visio 2007.
  7. Installed SP1 for Project 2007.
  8. Applied all updates through Microsoft Update as of April 2008, including several Office updates.
  9. Installed the original Office Live Plug-in.
  10. Applied all the May 2008 updates through Microsoft Update.

So to me this seems like a logical order to have done things in.

But now when I try install the Office Live Workspace Update 1.1 it fails because of KB 941637. When I try run KB 941637 on its own, I see an error message about the expected product not being found.

Why is this happening, and what is the solution? I'd prefer not to have to reinstall everything if possible.

Re: HELP! Office Live addin failed install

Hi Neville,

Did you look in the log file and get the same error code as Jamie, above?

Also, did any of you install Visual Studio 2008 on the same machine?  We are tracking an issue where the Web Authoring Component included in VS 2008 seems to interfere with the installation of this patch.

We are working closely with the Office team to determine the root cause of the patch's inability to install on some machine configurations.

Hi Oscar

Yes, I get the same error as Jamie. Also, I have the Visual Studio 2008 Express Editions installed on this machine.

Re: HELP! Office Live addin failed install

Hi!

I got the same problem on Vista x64. I have also Visual Studio 2008 installed. After I uninstalled the "Microsoft Visual Studio Web Authoring Component" I was able to install the Office Live Add-In.

Re: HELP! Office Live addin failed install

Thanks Stephan,

It looks like the Web Authoring Component that ships with Visual Studio 2008 is also causing the Office patch to return error 17031.

Neville, Vi_, Klaus and Jamie:

Please let us know if you have VS2008 installed.  If you do, please uninstall the "Web Authoring Component" that was installed by VS 2008.  You can uninstall it by using the "Change" option for VS2008 from within the installed programs list in the Control Panel.  I can also provide you with more detailed instructions on how to do this.

I also encourage anyone that is running into issues and does NOT have Visual Studio 2008 installed to continue to post to this thread.

I'd like to thank those that took the time to report this issue and provide follow up information.  We will continue working to find a more permanent fix.  Thanks for bearing with us!
