Cannot open files in a Shared Workspace from within Office App

I have installed the Office Live Add-In (beta) to Office 2003.  When I open the File Open dialog box, I have "Microsoft Office Live" as a location choice on the left bar.  When I choose this, the dialog box shows "My Workspaces" at the top and lists those Workspaces that I have created.  However, it does not list Workspaces that have been shared with me (as an editor).  I can also go to "My Network Places" within this dialog box, and open myuser.workspace.office.live.com, but this leaves me with the same result.

I believe the other box used to try this was XP Pro with Office 2007 with a similar limitation.

I also tried to add "differentuser.workspace.office.live.com" as a network place on my PC, but couldn't get this to work.  [Nice try.]

Is there any way to open documents from a shared workspace without connecting to the Workspace in IE?

Yes.  You should see workspaces that you have editor access to on the list of workspaces in the Office Add-in drop-down list (Select "Open from Office Live" or "Save to Office Live" once you have signed in)

File->Open will only show you your workspaces but the Add-in shows you all the workspaces. t

To view files in a Shared Workspace, click on the "Open from Office Live" menu item that is added to your toolbar as a result of the Add-in install (Go to Office Live, Open From Office Live, Save to Office Live) are added just below your current toolbar)

For Office 2007 users, this menu item is added to the Jewel (New, Open, Save, Save As, Open from Office Live, Save to Office Live).

Hope this helps,

 Kavitha

Re: Cannot open files in a Shared Workspace from within Office App

This is not working for me.

Vista, have the add-in and the 1.1 update.

I open Excel. I say open from office live. I have to login (As a tangential issue - this annoys me.  I am already logged in to live messenger and live email, but I still have to login again. ) I see My Workspaces. Under that I see documents. That's it. I do not see any of the documents that have been shared with me from other workspaces.

I'm confused. Isn't a primary purpose of this product to allow me to share files on the net? I'm really not meaning to be rude here. I just wonder if I should invest my time with this particular product. Now mesh is out there too....

Thanks in advance for your feedback!

Yes, I did finally discover where you can get to other workspaces.

After you click on the toolbar button for Open and Sign In, click Cancel in the Open dialog box.  Click AGAIN on the toolbar button for Open, and now you will see that instead of Sign In, it should show your username, a Sign Out link, and then all of your own and your shared workspaces.  Clunky, but functional.

I have installed the new add-in, but this was available before that.

Re: Cannot open files in a Shared Workspace from within Office App

I have the same problem with Office 2007 and XP Pro SP3. If I log into Office Live through Excel, Open from Office Live, then I only see documents in my workspace, none shared from other users. If I login to Office Live from a shortcut on my desktop I see both sets of files.

Re: Cannot open files in a Shared Workspace from within Office App

Hello Greysmoke,

We have two known issues with the Office file dialog:

1)      The file dialog that only shows you your workspaces and Documents workspace, by default. To workaround this, our Add-in provides the complete list.

2)      You can only open shared workspaces (and documents within those workspaces) directly from Office. Currently, there isn’t a way to open an individually shared document directly from Office i.e. those that show up under Shared With Me/Documents Workspace. To open an individual shared document, you need to login into Office Live via the web.

To open a shared workspace starting from Office, follow these steps:1) Open Excel, log into Office Live - a File dialog opens up with Open/Cancel buttons showing "My Workspaces".

2) Close this file dialog.

3) Go back to the file menu and click on "Open from Office Live".

4) Select the shared workspace from the flyout and the file dialog will open with the documents in that workspace.
