working online with collaborator

I just opened my first workspace but do not see any way of working online on a document at the same time my collaborator is and seeing each other's changes in real-time, as we make them.

I'm not convinced that workspace even does this.

Can anyone explain this to me?

Re: working online with collaborator

Hi,

You can use Sharedview to do real-time screen sharing within Office Live Workspace with other collaborators, but only one person can edit at a time.

 Thanks,

Avi

Re: working online with collaborator

Hi Avi: Thanks for the reply. Sorry to bother you with such basic questions, but....

Does this work by my editing a document on my desktop (which my collaborator can see with sharedview), then I upload it to workspace, then she can download that and work on it, then upload her changes, etc?

I don't really see a way to edit online at all. It seems like I do the real work on my desktop, with my own version of Office, then somehow upload it.

Sorry again to bother people with this basic stuff. Help files don't seem to answer these basic questions.

 JO

Re: working online with collaborator

Hello...can anyone provide clarification to the file sharing process as detailed above.  Specifically, if I have opened a document and am editing, what is the experience of another user who attempts to edit this same document simultaneously?  Does he/she receive a warning that the document cannot be edited at this time, indicating that the file is in use, etc?  If so, does it identify the user?  Unlike some other posters, I'd prefer that only one person have the ability to edit the document at one time, but am curious as to the user experience.  Thanks!

Re: working online with collaborator

That's correct.  When a document is opened by someone with "editor" permissions, it is locked.  When another user with "editor" permissions attempts to access this file, they will be immediately notified that the document is locked and by whom.

Re: working online with collaborator

Hi, I wanted to check in case anything might have changed on this.

Are there still no simultaneous update capacities?  We have a Japanese user who would like to have multiple users updating business spreadsheets in Excel.  Still not feasible?  Is there any plan for such a feature to be added?  Thanks!

"Bump."

Another Japanese user hoping that OLW might support simultaneous editing.

Still curious to know if this is in the works.  Cheers.
