Update to Office Live Workspace

The cool thing about building software services on the web is that you can deliver surprises (hopefully pleasant ones!) to your customers without asking them to install new software or change the way they work.

Today is one of those days for Office Live Workspace as we “go live” with our first feature update since we launched last December. We listened to the great feedback and suggestions you made over the last few months and here’s what you’ll find when you use your Office Live Workspace today:

  • A new Activity pane to help you keep track of what’s happening in your workspaces and email notifications so you always know when the people you share with make updates. This feature is a lot of fun and makes it easy to see at glance the changes happening in your workspace and in individual documents. Now you’ll know when someone comments on your document, adds a note, or updates an important list.

  • New support for adding multiple documents to your workspaces. The Add multiple documents button makes it is easier than ever to bring your documents into a workspace by browsing and selecting files from your computer or dragging and dropping files on the document uploader.

  • New permalinks for sharing direct hyperlinks to your workspaces and documents. Now you can bookmark individual workspaces and items in your workspace using the “add to favorites” tool in your web browser or copy the address bar and paste those links into emails to share with others.

  • A new Share workspace UI to easily invite others to your workspace. With the improved address book buttons you can quickly add people from your Windows Live addresses book (contacts from Windows Live Hotmail and Windows Live Messenger) and people you have shared with before. You can also include more details in your invitation with the larger message box and choose to CC yourself on the invitation.

Of course we also made a bunch of other little fixes and improvements, such as long Comments, and for our Vista users, we have an update to the Office Live Add-in which supports Microsoft Office 2007 SP1.  We appreciate all the feedback we’ve heard from you since Office Live Workspace launched and hope you like what you see today.  Let us know what you think!

Great stuff. I'm very pleased about the permalinks to documents although Can i ask that you make them more readable than what they are at the moment?

This:

workspace.office.live.com/.../document-name

is much better than something like this:

workspace.office.live.com.

Activity pane is also useful. I've suggested some sort of notification engine many times on here and this is a huge step in the right direction.

Hi Jamie,

The permalinks feature uses opaque tokens to represent links to documents so that even if the document gets renamed or otherwise change the links will not break.

This allows you the freedom to bookmark or share an item knowing that future edits will not break the links.    I hope this clears things up.  Please reply if you want more info on this feature.

Please tell me Rob, if there is a way to change my username in this workspace community site.  I was so excited to tell you what I thought of the new changes, I signed right up and spelled my username wrong as “Treebeeze” rather than Treebreeze. Well, as humbling as it is, I still have to tell you what I think. AWESOME!!! I cannot believe the many changes you’ve already made in workspaces. We, personally, have written or called in about many of these changes, and feel as though you are hearing us.  Although I have not had the time to go through it extensively, I soon will, especially considering I use it the majority of each day.  We’ve started using workspaces as a major part of our platform along with Office Live Small Business. I have expressed to the tech team that I believe workspaces are more stabilized than Small Business even though workspaces are still technically beta.  Well, I could go on and on, but for now I just wanted to say how ecstatic I am about the changes I’m seeing in workspaces, we all are here at The Proficients Project. I plan to chime in once in a while to let you know what we think and to mention issues that still may not be addressed, such as the problem of moving or deleting “.html” files that appear as “.htm” files. As you can imagine, this is a real issue for us. Nevertheless, we are very pleased. Thanks for making a great product and most of all for listening to us and responding so quickly.

I wrote this last night but did not get it posted till today.

Why can I not access the new changes.  Everything looks exactly the same and I don't have the Add Multiple Files or the Activity Pane.  Is there an installation procedure?

I am trying out Office Live Workspace beta after receiving an invitation from MS.  I'm an end-user, not a developer.  If I'm posting on the wrong forum, please let me know.

As I've floundered around learning Workspace, I've had questions.  Unfortunately, I can't find a discussion group that is specific to the Live Workspace product.  I have noticed numerous seemingly related products:

Office Live Workspace

Office Live Small Business (essentials & premium?)

Office Live Meeting

Office Live

Would someone please explain what is up with all of the "Live" products and where Live Workspace fits in the scheme? Also, are some of these being merged, phased out, etc.

Thanks, Dave
