Commentary and discussion of the Workspace product: where it's been, where it's going, and what you can do with it.

From the launch room

Today is a tremendously exciting day for me.  It is the day Office Live Workspace goes live to the public.  We’ve been live for a little while internally to make sure things are working as we expect; today we opened the gates for the first set of US-only customers who signed up on our waitlist.  As I write this we are gathered for the first time in the launch room, around the Office Live Administration Console.  Here a bunch of my equally excited colleagues will over the next few days and weeks slowly open the Office Live Workspace service, first to the United States and soon the rest of the world.  With bated breath we just pushed the button to let in the first trickle of customers a few moments back, and with excited anticipation we will watch as this trickle grows into a raging river – we have a lot of people on the waitlist.  As we see the service hold up to scale and make any necessary adjustments to keep things running smoothly, we’ll eventually remove the waitlist altogether.

It was in June 2006 when I first learned of the newly formed charter of Office Live Workspace, even though at the time it didn’t have a name.  It did, however, have a clear and compelling vision of providing an online productivity service built around simplicity and ease of use, to enable people to publish, organize and access their information from anywhere, and easily share and collaborate with others.  I joined the team as the development manager, and as the second member of the team.  Over the last 18 months the team has grown as we worked to deliver on this vision.  Today is the proud day the effort of the team comes to fruition.  We’ve put in a lot of planning and development effort to bring to our customers the best possible online productivity service experience.  As we have had people internally use the service recently we’ve gotten a lot of feedback, and it’s great to see the excitement and buzz build up.  In this first release we’re also already aware of improvements we can make, and as we go forward we will be working hard to keep listening to our customers and improving the service on a regular and frequent basis.

Thank you for using Office Live Workspace, be sure to let us know what you think, and we hope your experience with it is as much fun as it was for us to build it!

I thank for the effort of you and your team.

Office Live Workspace was open in U.S.A.,

but what kind of schedule will it be shown in about other countries?

maurice, we want to make sure that customers of the service continue to have a reliable and responsive experience, so we will be monitoring how the service performs and based on that sign up more customers as quickly as we are convinced we can support them.

t_wd, the schedule for the international launch is still being worked upon and we hope to get it out sometime next year.  This site will have more information as we get ready to roll it out.

I am just curious how long it takes to get access to use the Office Workspace. I signed up and it told me I would get an email saying when my workspace was ready to use. However, I never did get such an email. If it is not available to use, I guess I will look elsewhere for similar product that might be available.

... how long should we wait for people outside the US to use this exciting system? In Central America to be more precise...

How long am I supposed to wait to receive the confirmation email saying that my workspace is ready to go??

jeff, Ivan, thank you for your patience as we release our service.  We have a lot of demand and we're letting in people as quickly as we can support them.  We also have a little work to do to support markets outside the US so that may take a little longer.  I can't provide dates, however, but this community site will have updates as they happen.

For years i have envisioned something like this will be done...

I actually use one email address to send my office docs  to my other email address just to keep copies of them.. thus, making them accessible anytime on the internet.

I'm very excited and thanks so much!

Sam - can you give us an idea of where you are in the process of letting people in? For example -" the most recent person to be let in signed up for their workspace on October 15th" ? That would give us some idea of where we are in the queue.  On the positive side, you should be necouraged that people are anxious to get in.

I know this belongs in the forum, but I am too excited to try out this service!

Today I received the 'Workspace is Ready' e-mail with the link to complete the sign-up, but when I follow the link and log-in with my Windows Live ID, it prompts me to verify my first and last name, then says that I am already on the preregistration list and will be contacted when my workspace is ready.

Any ideas?

danryan, I'm afraid I cannot provide the data on how far along we are working through the waitlist.  Thank you so much for your enthusiasm about trying the service out - it really shouldn't be long now - thank you for your patience.

wliska, we will need some information to understand the issue, so please provide your name, email address at which you received the invitation, and the live ID you are using to sign-up in at support.officelive.live.com/eform.aspx

I signed up a month or two back. And then again a day or two ago. Presto, several hours ago I received my invitation. I'm in Vancouver BC so it appears that the "invitations" extend into Canada at least. I'll be demoing this to my students tomorrow!

My fingers are itchin' to try Office Live - I've used similar products in the past, but the ability to sync with Outlook is pretty awesome.

One thing I wonder about these web-based apps is why nobody has offered a "Password Keeper" application - I keep logins and passwords online in a text editing doc through another service and it's come in handy many times.

Obviously, security is an issue, so I only enter partial information that I'm sure will spark my memory if I don't use the password for a few months, or even years.

I have found it to be very handy to have my (partial) logins and passwords stored online - I wonder if other users would find it handy as well.  Although I guess a lot of people use the same password over and over...

I am very excited to check this out!  What a perfect addition to Office 2007.  Unfortunately, I am one of the people having the "Unable to compete sign-up" issue.  Oh well...that's the burden of beta!  =)

I used Google Docs with my 100 college students for the past year and found it successful.  On January 9 my classes begin and it would be *great* to introduce Office Live Workspace, but if I'm still on the outside looking in, then its five more months of Google Docs.

Nope.  Maybe if I count to ten and hit "Refresh."

Forgive me if it appears like I'm lost and don't know what I'm doing but I am still new to the computer. However, if I could make a suggestion and your team likes it enough to use, then perhaps other neophytes like myself may be more likely to experiment with something new like this, even if it's over their heads as it is for me....   What would you think of the idea of adding an optional, downloadable link next to the sign-in location, which would have an add-on for your browser?  This add-on could have tool-tips with definitions of new terminology, phrases, terms that may have a different meaning when used in limited or specialized context that may not be widely known, or is unique to a limited topic. Just a thought, or whatever.

Guys:

Salivating.  That's what I'm doing!  SALIVATING.

OLW looks like it will do what I have been trying (with limited success) with other programs.  The closest I've come to hitting paydirt so far is another Microsoft product, Groove.

As an independent consultant with multiple clients, the ability for me to post documents for review and edits across teams is critical.  Boy, I can't wait until my ticket is punched on this product.

Thanks for the blog and the forum and for generally keeping us up to date as best you are able.  And congrats on going live!

This is my first day.

There appears to be lots of "what  to do" but very little on "How to do"

So How about some simple " How to get started"  instructions  minus hype  please.
